How to Make Traditional Irish Soda Bread for St. Patrick’s Day
This easy no-yeast bread is perfect for St. Patrick’s Day or any cozy March meal!
Ingredients:
- 4 cups (500g) all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 ¾ cups (420ml) buttermilk
- 2 tablespoons sugar (optional, for a slightly sweet touch)
- ½ cup raisins (optional)
Instructions:
-
Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease a cast-iron skillet.
-
Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar (if using).
-
Add Buttermilk: Gradually pour in the buttermilk, stirring with a wooden spoon or hands until the dough just comes together. If using raisins, fold them in now.
-
Knead Lightly: Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead gently (about 30 seconds) just until it forms a round loaf. Don’t over-knead—it should be slightly sticky.
-
Shape & Score: Place the dough on the prepared baking sheet. Using a sharp knife, cut a deep "X" on top—this helps the bread cook evenly.
-
Bake: Bake for 30–40 minutes, until the crust is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
-
Cool & Enjoy: Let the bread cool on a wire rack before slicing. Serve warm with butter, jam, or alongside a hearty soup!
